Anyone that has successfully applied for Social Security disability benefits can tell you that the process takes a lot of time. The initial application itself can take up to 90 days but if an appeal needs to be made, which is often the case as only around 30 percent are approved during the initial application, then it can take years to complete the process.

Social security claim status check

With the process taking so much time it can make anyone anxious, so fortunately there are ways to check the status of the application. Depending on the program an applicant has applied for, whether it’s Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), there are online, telephone, mail and in person options to see where the application is in the process.

Checking Online

This option is currently only available for those that applied for SSDI. By going to the Social Security Administration (SSA) website and creating an online account, or accessing an account that has already been created, information about any applications can be accessed. The webpage for the account access is https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/.

If you haven’t already signed up for an account, the process is fairly easy and only takes a few minutes. Start by clicking the blue “Sign In or Create an Account” button and on the next page scroll down to the Create Account section, click create account and follow the instructions. If the claim has been made for SSI, then using the following options can help you.

Checking By Telephone

For some people, checking online is inconvenient or they may not be able to create an online account immediately to verify their disability claim status. To reach the SSA for claims information call their toll-free number 1-800-772-1213 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. (EST) Monday through Friday to speak with a customer service representative.

Requesting Information By Mail

While requesting information by mail is likely the slowest option, questions can be sent to the SSA Office of Public Inquiries at:

Social Security Administration

Office of Public Inquiries

1100 West High Rise

6401 Security Blvd.

Baltimore, MD 21235

Checking with the Local Field Office

The final option to find out where your disability claim status is currently at in the process is to go to a local field office to speak with a representative in person. The address for the closest field office can be found using this website, or information can usually be found in local phone directories as well.
