Disability Insurance in New York State

Published on July 31st, 2017

In the state of New York, you can apply for disability benefits through the Social Security Administration (SSA) if you have been injured or suffer from an illness and are no longer able to work. In fact, New York has a higher percentage of people on disability benefits than those in other states. If you are a New York resident who is in need of disability benefits, the information below will be helpful to you.

State Disability Insurance

Completing the Application

The first step in requesting disability benefits is to complete the application. This process can be done online, by phone, or in person at the Social Security office. The process can be done on your own timeline if you complete the online application. However, the application must be completed in its entirety and within 30 days of the start of your application. If you do not meet these guidelines, then your claim will likely be denied. If you apply in person or over the phone, it will give you the opportunity to ask questions, and you will have the assistance of a qualified professional to answer questions and help to make sure your application is complete and ready for submission. However, you will not necessarily get to work within your own time period. You will have to make an appointment to go to the local SSA office in person or if you call, there is a possibility you may have to wait on hold until there is someone available to help you. So, all of the methods have both benefits and liabilities. It is up to you to decide which option is best for you.

The Evaluation Process in New York

Once your application is complete, it is sent to one of the four state disability processing agency, which will make a medical determination on it. The agencies are located in Albany, Bowling Green Station, Buffalo, and Endicott. It is important for you to know which agency your application has been sent to so you know which one to contact if you have questions or need to provide additional information. The examiner assigned to your case will gather medical information from the information you provide and will determine if they need you to have a consultative examination to obtain more information about your condition. The examiner will also reach out to former employers to confirm your work history for the last fifteen years.
